Early Life and Career
Betsy DeVos was born in Holland, Michigan, on January 8, 1958. She attended public schools in her hometown before going on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in 1980. After graduation, she worked as a lobbyist for several organizations before becoming a full-time philanthropist. In 1989, she married Dick DeVos, the scion of one of Michigan’s wealthiest families. The couple has four children together.
Betsy and Dick DeVos have become major financial supporters of conservative causes and candidates over the years. In 1990, they founded the Great Lakes Education Project, which advocates for school choice and charter schools in Michigan. In 1993, they helped to pass a state law that created a tax credit scholarship program for low-income students attending private schools. And in 2000, they were instrumental in passing a law that created Michigan’s first charter school law.
In recent years, Betsy DeVos has emerged as a national figure in the fight for school choice and educational reform. She served as the chair of the American Federation for Children, a national advocacy group that promotes school choice initiatives like voucher programs and tax credit scholarships. She also served on the board of directors of the Alliance for School Choice, another national school choice advocacy group. In 2016, she was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the Secretary of Education.
